Opportunity Description

Background information

The world hosts over one billion persons with disabilities worldwide. Their existence is hampered by insufficient legal frameworks to protect their rights and a lack of financial and human resources to perform their activities related to basic needs. Likewise, they also have a lack of opportunities to have access to information and knowledge, as well as the benefits of scientific and technological development.

Therefore, the UNESCO/Emir Jaber Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Prize for Digital Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, which is awarded every two years, recognizes the exceptional contributions of individuals and organizations in promoting the inclusion; and improving the lives of persons with disabilities through the application of digital solutions, resources, and technologies.

Moreover, the Prize has also direct thematic relationships with other UNESCO’s Major Programmes. The application for the Prize is open now.

Details

Submission period: 16 June 2020 to 2 September 2020

Awarding institution: UNESCO

The Prize information

It will be given biennially in 2020/2021. The Prize will be split equally to:

  • An Individual Person; and
  • An Organization.

These awards are for persons and organizations and are not for projects or programs. However, successful individuals and organizations will usually have undertaken a series of relevant projects and programs that will contribute to their accomplishments. Still, it is the whole personal or organizational contribution that will be evaluated.

Prize value

The total value of the prize is US$ 40,000, which will be distributed equally between the individual and the organizational winner.

UNESCO will feature the Prize winners and will attempt to work with them to boost and promote their sustained activities in the field of the digital empowerment of persons with disabilities.

Thematic axes

The Prize is focused on three important thematic axes in UNESCO’s work with persons with disabilities, including a swift response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

  • Articulating policy, advocacy, collaboration, and partnerships;

  • Building and fostering the capacities of people to create, conform, and use digital solutions in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.
