Overview

The nomination for the 2022 UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor award is now open. UN-Habitat is the United Nations program working for a better urban future. The mission of UN-Habitat is to “advance transformative change in cities and human settlements through knowledge, policy guidance, technical assistance and concerted action to leave no one and no place behind.”

The UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor award is one of the most prestigious human settlement awards in the globe. The award recognizes best practices, initiatives & creative solutions that have made remarkable contributions in the field of human settlements, provision of housing, highlighting the difficulty of people living in poverty or who have been displaced, developing and boosting human settlements and the quality of urban life to leave no one behind echoing the Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities [in its 2022 edition].

About the award

The award, a plaque engraved with the name of the winner, will be awarded during the Global Observance of World Habitat Day on 3 October 2022.

Who can apply?

People, organizations, the private sector, government, non-governmental, bilateral, and multilateral aid organizations coping with sustainable projects having a significant impact in society, and any Habitat Agenda partner who has transformed the lives of people could be nominated for the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor.

They include:

• Government and inter-governmental institutions or agencies, including bilateral aid agencies
• Local and Regional Governments or their associations
• Civil society organizations
• The private sector
• National Habitat Committees or focal points
• Research and academic organizations
• Public or private foundations
• Multilateral agencies (United Nations Agencies, World Bank, etc.)
• The media
• Individuals

The Selection process

• UN-Habitat will make a preliminary evaluation of the nominations and submissions following the deadline of July 31 and confirm that the submission complies with the standards outlined in the guidelines. The Selection Committee, which consists of senior management and UN-Habitat experts, will be sent the qualifying submissions.
• The Executive Director will receive recommendations from the Selection Committee outlining their selection criteria for up to five winning initiatives after they have chosen their winning candidates.
• The final decision regarding the recipients of the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor will be made by the Executive Director of UN-Habitat based on the recommendations of the Selection Committee.
• The UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor nominees will be informed of the results starting on August 16, 2022.
• The winners will be presented with their prizes during the global World Habitat Day celebration on October 3, 2022.

Submissions for the award

Nominators for this year’s UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor Award should submit details of their nominees’ accomplishments by the due deadline. Therefore, submissions should not be more than five pages. However, there is no restriction on supporting material as annexes in the submissions.

Nominators can nominate eligible candidates using the nomination form online.

Terms & Condition:

• The person or organization named in the entry form will receive the prize for the winning submission, but they can also have a representative accepted on their or its behalf.
• UN-Habitat won’t need to ask for additional permission for any such use because all entries will be available for international exhibition, demonstration, publication, and media coverage.
• When someone other than the overall organizer or copyright holder submits a project, it is assumed that they have given permission for the submission and the conditions outlined in points 1 and 2 above.
• Supporting materials, such as media articles (URL), videos (URL), and images (JPEG), are very welcome as part of the online submission.
• Please be aware that all information with attachments must be submitted online in English and must follow the nomination guidelines.
• Submissions made in a language other than English will not be accepted.
• Submissions that don’t fit the requirements, aren’t complete, or arrive after the deadline of July 31, 2022, won’t be taken into account.

Generally, all submissions should have the following format:

The “Short description of the Project, Individual or Organization’s Main Achievements” section of the online form is an important section. The information in this section of 800 words should cover:

1. Background

Substantial information about the organization or individual nominated, including mission, goals, history, and duration of experience in the field of human settlements.

2. Description of the initiative or project

Situation or problem tackled, objectives, target beneficiaries, investment in the project in terms of capacity, material and financial resources, activities carried out, duration of the project, achievements, and outputs (provide photographs/evidence of outputs), lessons learned, best practices from the project.

3. Main partners

List partners and their functions and levels of participation in the planning, design, implementation, and funding of the project.

4. Impact

For example, the estimated number of beneficiaries, types of beneficiaries e.g., women, children, people living in poverty, victims of displacements, etc. Provide quantitative and qualitative values.

5. Sustainability

Describe how the initiative has generated enduring change (by enacting new legislation or policy, by supporting capacity building and community empowerment, by strengthening the institutional framework by applying efficiency, accountability, and transparency, etc.).

6. Transferability and up scaling

Describe whether this is a replicable best practice and explain the process of replication where applicable.

7. Innovation

Describe the main innovative aspects of the initiative.

8. Acknowledgment of the initiative

Provide a list of references, articles, publications, media reports about the initiative starting with the newest ones and where possible submit copies of the articles as an annex.
