Opportunity Description

Fellowship overview

Applications for the Fellowship at Auschwitz from the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE) Journalism Program are now open. Each year, FASPE Journalism grants fellowships to 14 to 16 journalism students and early-career journalists. FASPE is an intensive, two-week study program in professional ethics and ethical leadership, mainly in journalistic careers. Moreover, this program is designed to challenge journalists to critically examine constructs, current developments, and issues that cause ethical concerns in their professions in the current settings in which they work.

This fellowship program challenges its Fellows to understand their responsibility to act as ethical leaders in their careers in journalism and the media.

Details

Application deadline: January 02, 2022

Organizer: Fellowship at Auschwitz from the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE)

Focus areas: Business, Journalism, and Law

Program dates: June 24 – July 28, 2022

Location: Berlin, Germany, and Poland

Format of the program

FASPE commences by examining the actions and choices of German and international journalists in covering and supporting Nazi policies. FASPE then goes on with this historical example to help Journalism Fellows recognize their role and responsibility as individuals with influence in their communities and the media. Fellows spend two weeks in Berlin and Poland, where they visit key sites of Nazi history and attend the daily seminars run by specialized faculty.

FASPE Journalism Fellows examine topics such as:

  • The participation of German and foreign journalists in Nazi policies through inadequate coverage or absolute misrepresentation of the crimes being committed.
  • The impact of technology on journalism.
  • The role of journalists in electoral politics and in holding power-holders accountable.
  • The nature and decency of advocacy journalism.
  • Normalizing unusual behavior through media coverage.
  • The hardness of reporting in an era in which fake news and accusations of “fake news” are common.
  • Balancing the costs and benefits of access tactics to address ethical issues within the journalism community or media channels.

Benefits

  • FASPE Fellowships are fully funded for the attendants.
  • The program Fellows travel with Business and Law Fellows, allowing them to widen their understanding of the role of experts over shared meals and activities and in several interdisciplinary seminars.
  • FASPE Journalism Fellows will be able to work, as the previous fellows currently do, as editors, reporters, nonfiction writers, photojournalists, broadcasters, and in multiple other roles after they complete the program, across a wide range of media.
  • Through their shred exchanges, Fellows establish long-lasting relationships and deep links that grow over time.
  • And Journalism Fellows participate in formal and informal networks that assist with their careers.
