Program Overview

Korean Foundation is accepting applications for the 2023 KF Fellowship for Korean Language Training (KLT) Program. Annually, the Korea Foundation offers a fellowship program for Korean language training (KLT) for the general promotion and spreading of the Korean language as the basis of promoting Korean studies and Korea-related activities abroad.

Therefore, the KF Fellowship for Korean Language Training (KLT) program provides an opportunity for graduate scholars of Korean studies, Korean studies researchers, and those working in Korea-related fields abroad to learn Korean in an extensive immersion program at a university in Korea.

Applications deadline: 31 August 2022
Notification of results: December 2022
Duration: (minimum) 6 months, extendable to 12 months (maximum) but at least six months attendance is mandatory
Fellowship Type: Paid

Start date: March- August (Spring term) or September-February (Fall term)

Benefits

The fellowship provider provides:

  1. Living expenses(every month payment)
  • For undergraduates, BA or MA degree holders or individuals with fewer than three years of related career experience: KRW 1,000,000

– For Ph.D. candidates and those with at least three years of relevant career experience: KRW 1,200,000

  1. Travel allowance: KRW 300,000 (one-time benefit)
  2. Tuition and fees for the learning institution. Approximately KRW 2,000,000 per term (12 weeks)
  3. Health insurance. Accident insurance and medical care insurance provided by a Korean insurance company

Eligibility requirements

  • Open to applicants worldwide;
  • Individuals specializing in Korean studies (humanities, social sciences, and arts & culture);
  • Applicants presently involved in Korea-related research, or are working in a Korea-related field and match with one of the following profiles are eligible to apply for the KLT program. Importantly, all applicants must be able to understand and speak at least basic Korean.
Type Details
MA/Ph.D. candidates Graduate students pursuing a major or minor in a Korea-related field with a detailed thesis proposal on a Korea-related topic
University professors, university lecturers, and researchers Professors or lecturers who are at present teaching Korea-related or Korean language courses or researchers conducting Korea-related research at a university or research institute (non-profit, government-sponsored, university-affiliated, etc.).
Professionals Professionals engaged in Korea-related activities journalists who chiefly deal with current affairs in Korea)
Undergraduate students ① Undergraduate students whose major or minor is Korean studies (or Korean language) and who are at least in the 3rd year of their respective course and have taken over eight classes regarding Korean studies (or Korean language) at a university that does not offer any Korean studies or Korean language degrees.
Former Diplomat Fellows Previous fellows who have completed the KF Korean Language and Culture Program for Diplomats and aspire to take more courses focused on language training (applicant pool determined separately)

Who are not eligible to apply?

  • Korean citizens
  • Individuals already studying or carrying out research in Korea
  • Candidates planning to enroll in a degree program at a higher educational institution in Korea
  • Individuals who have received the KF Fellowship for Korean Language Training within the last two years (2021-2022).

Notification of Results

The notification date is subject to change without prior notice. Applicants will be notified individually through e-mail.

Fellows’ responsibilities

The fellows must advance to the next-higher language level for each term of study. After the fellowship period has ended, receivers must submit a final report of their results to the Foundation in agreement with a format provided by the KF.

Important reminder:

  1. The KF will choose the institution where the fellowship recipient will receive training, and the recipient’s fellowship period must start in March or September. The following year’s enrollment is not permitted for recipients.
  2. Fellowship recipients are prohibited from receiving funding from another KF program or an outside organization while they are on the fellowship.
  3. Recipients are prohibited from engaging in any lucrative or compensatory activity while their fellowship is in effect.

    ② Proposal (Within 400 words in English or 400 letters in Korean, please explain your reasons and goals for undertaking Korean language training, the necessity for Korean language competency in your studies or current job, and future plans.)
  • Supplementary Documents
    ① Document that verifies your current affiliation
    ② Certificate of employment or enrollment issued during the application period : any document that verifies your current affiliation
  • Evidence of Korean language proficiency
    – Certificate proving Korean language proficiency
    e.g. TOPIK or KLPT (Applicants with TOPIK Level 3 proficiency preferred)

– University language program transcripts- Official award that could prove Korean proficiency
e.g. Award from Korean Speech Contest held by a Korean embassy

  • Two letters of reference(Each letter must come from a different referee)
    – Head of affiliated institution
    1. Undergraduate and graduate students: department head, thesis supervisor, etc
    2. Professors, lecturers or other professionals: head of applicant’s affiliated institution
    e.g. the affiliated university’s dean or higher authority, director or higher authority, director or higher authority of the affiliated division, etc

– Korean language instructors: must be authorized professors or lecturers specializing in Korean and be capable of evaluating the applicant’s level of Korean proficiency
