About the award

The United Nations Public Service Awards is the most esteemed award that recognizes excellence in public service at the local, regional, and national levels. Likewise, it celebrates the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions that result in a more effective and accountable public administration in countries across the world. In the form of an annual competition, the UN Public Service Awards promotes the role, professionalism, and visibility of public service while, at the same time, honoring creativity and excellence in public service in support of the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the principle of leaving no one behind.

The Awards are supported by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA).

Benefits

To celebrate the achievements of public service institutions, the UN holds Public Service Day intended to:

  • Recognize the value and importance of public service to the community;
  • Underscore the contribution of public service in the development process;
  • Acknowledge the work of public servants, and motivate young people to pursue careers in the public sector.

Eligibility

  • Public sector institutions at the subnational and national levels of all UN Member States are eligible to apply.
  • In the event of public-private partnerships, the lead candidate must be a public sector institution to apply for the award.

Available categories

The 2021 United Nations Public Service Awards (UNPSA) is accepting nominations in the following categories:

  1. Strengthening innovation to provide inclusive and equitable services for all, including through digital transformation
  2. Increasing the effectiveness of public institutions to reach the SDGs
  3. Advancing gender-responsive public services to obtain the SDGs
  4. Institutional readiness and response in times of crisis

You can also join (UNDESA) for a capacity development webinar on the UNPSA on the 6 October (8:00 am – 10:30 am EDT) to discuss the UNPSA process and boost the capacity of institutions for the successful preparation of a nomination for the 2021 UNPSA.
