Urban Health Initiative

The USAID-funded Urban Health Initiative (UHI) Program’s goal is to improve the health conditions of people living in urban areas, mainly concentrating on the health of women and children and other vulnerable peoples. Furthermore, health interventions seek to increase demand, access, and quality of health services. Hence, led by Jhpiego and implemented by a dynamic consortium of organizations, UHI is implemented in five cities in Afghanistan.

Job Summary

JHPIEGO is hiring 21 individuals as Mentors for five provinces to implement its intended project in the provinces. So, Mentors will be working in each of the five cities in a mentoring team to implement integrated whole team, on-site mentoring to better the quality of care, and enhance the delivery of health services at selected Tertiary, District Hospitals, and Comprehensive Health Centers (CHC).

Job Description:

Roles and Responsibilities:

  •  Advocate for mentorship and negotiate with hospital/facility management for buy-in to onsite mentoring and quality development
  • Support establishment of facility quality improvement team and selection of onsite clinical representative for the mentorship program
  •  Facilitate initial evaluation, analysis, and action plan for improving the service delivery and data strengthening across all clinical service delivery areas (e.g. EPI, nutrition, MNH, CH, TB)
  • Prepare a detailed mentoring schedule for daily visits to each facility including service delivery improvement plan follow-ups, learning activities, and data review
  • Support preparation for learning sessions (e.g. training supplies, care of models, commodities, learning tools)
  •  Enable monthly mentoring visits for quality improvement, learning, and data solidification
    role model behavior and practices (e.g. respectful maternity care) and provision of clinical care and services
  •  Work with onsite clinical for a mentorship program to plan for on-site practice
  •  Coordinate mobile phone-based mentoring with service providers and support practice of skills
  • Support facility team to discuss and analyze and submit data every month
  •  Assure sufficient and proper record keeping of activities including mentoring plans, implementation progress, and mentoring visits
  •  Share records with pertinent stakeholders and supervisors as necessary
  • Make and submit timely reports as required including key issues, achievements, successes, problems, and lessons learned.
  •  Maintain coordination with other related project activities e.g. community engagement, leadership, and governance
  • Coordinate with clinical consultants for particular clinical interventions (e.g. TB)
  • Give constant feedback on the planned activities and issues as they arise (e.g. daily and weekly)
  • Participate in routine progress review and data presentations identifying trends and adjusting as required.

 Job Requirements

Qualifications and experience

  • Graduate Medical Doctor (MD) degree or registered midwife with at least 5 years’ clinical experience including maternal, newborn health, child health, family planning, TB, nutrition, EPI.
    Prior experience with conducting competency-based training and providing supportive supervision is an advantage.

Abilities/Skills:

  • Teamwork ability across a dissimilar team in a complex environment with multiple tasks, strict deadlines, and intense pressure to perform.
  • Robust skills in facilitation, team building, and coordination.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills including strong writing, analytical, and communication skills in Dari, Pashtu, and English (desirable).
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office software applications (Excel, Word, Outlook Explorer, PowerPoint) is beneficial.
  • Commitment and willingness to travel to rural areas in the country.
