Applications are currently open for the 2024 Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarships Program(ADB-JSP) at the University of Tokyo for international students.

The Government of Japan, as a funding body, primarily aims at ADB-JSP to provide an opportunity for the citizens of ADB’s developing member countries to pursue postgraduate studies. Japanese Government has designated the Asian Development Bank to organize this scholarship program.

ADB has designated the Division of Environmental Studies, consisting of six departments plus the Graduate Program in Sustainability Science at the GSFS (Graduate School of Frontier Sciences), to receive allocation with the ADB-JSP scholarship since 2000. The following departments are accepting ADB-JSP students:

  • Department of Natural Environmental Studies
  • Department of Ocean Technology, Policy, and Environment
  • Department of Environment Systems
  • Department of Human and Engineered Environmental Studies
  • Department of Socio-Cultural Environment Studies
    Applicants will get a degree of Master of Environmental Studies if they finish a Master course at any of the departments mentioned above.
  • Department of International Studies
    Applicants will get a degree of Master of International Studies if they complete a Master’s degree at the Department of International Studies.
  • Graduate Program in Sustainability Science

Applicants will get a degree of Master of Sustainability Science if they complete a Master’s degree at the Graduate Program in Sustainability Science.

Eligibility Conditions

To be eligible for ADB-Japan Scholarship Program 2024, candidates must meet the criteria below:

  • Candidates should be a national of an ADB borrowing member and a Japanese ODA scholarship
  • Should not hold dual citizenship of any developed country
  • They must have received an admission offer to an approved master’s course at the University of Tokyo
  • Provide a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with a superior academic record
  • Prove a minimum of two years of full-time professional work experience after graduating from a university degree at the time of application.
  • Candidates should have proficiency in oral and written English communication skills.
  • The age of the candidates should not be more than 35 years at the time of application unless waived in exceptional cases.
  • Be in good health condition.
  • Commit to return and work in their home country for at least two (2) years after graduation from the ADB-JSP to contribute to its development.
  • The applicant must not be an Alternate Directors, Executive Directors, management, staff, and consultant of ADB, or they must not have close relatives (blood or adoption) with the people mentioned above, including father, stepfather, spouse, mother, stepmother, brother, stepbrother, sister, stepsister, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew.
  • Must not be staff of ADB–JSP Designated Institutions
  • Should not be residing or working in a country other than their home country
  • Applicants must not have already enrolled in a graduate degree program.

How to Apply for ADB-Japan Scholarship Program?

Qualified candidates must follow the steps below to apply for ADB-Japan Scholarship Program:

  • Check your eligibility with the criteria above
  • Search for a supervisor and find a suitable supervisor who wishes to supervise you during the graduation thesis (through this link)
  • Prepare all the required documents and submit them, except Recommendation Letters, through the online application (Google Form) by selecting apply now button below by 10 December 2023.
  • Only selected candidates must submit documents for ADB scholarship application by Mid-February 2024. GSFS will nominate successful applicants who have submitted all the required documents to ADB by last March.
  • ADB-JSP will notify the University of the election result in May
  • Admission and immigration procedures will start in May to September.
  • Students can enter Japan with a student visa and should enroll in GSFS by late September.
  • The autumn semester will start on 01 October every year.

Requried Documents

Candidates have to download the application form and submit it with the following documents:

  • Official academic transcript or verified photocopy from the previous institution attended
  • Official diploma of graduation or attested photocopy from the previous University
  • Two confidential letters of recommendation

Important Notes:

  • The referees must submit the Recommendation letters to the International Liaison Office by email by 10 December 2023. The email title should be “ADB recommendation letter_Name (applicant’s name). Only the letters from the recommenders shall be acceptable.

What to Do After Applying?

Please read these instructions for the steps to know after submitting your application for the ADB-Japan Scholarship Program at the University of Tokyo:

  • After 10 December 2023, GSFS will start assessing the applications. The GSFS will notify all candidates of the first screening result by mid-February.
  • The selected applicants will then need to submit the original physical documents of the Application Form, Official academic transcript, and Official certificate of graduation, plus additional requested documents for the ADB scholarship application by 20 March 2024.

Note: All applicants should note that printed documents or photocopies are not considered “original.” The documents that your attended University has issued are original. If you cannot submit the original record, please submit a copy of the actual application documents that the University or a local notary office has attested as a true copy with a stamp.
