Opportunity Description

Applications are open for the one-year research fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in International Climate Protection in Germany. The foundation offers an opportunity to potential and experienced leaders from non-EU developing or transition courtiers working academically or practically in climate protection or climate-related resource preservation. The fellows will undertake a one-year research-based project in Germany focusing on tackling climate change, adaptation strategies, protecting ecosystems and biodiversity, or on the sustainable use of seas and oceans. The fellowship periods differ for Postdoc fellows, it will be about 12-24 months.

Each year, the Foundation will offer up to 15 International Climate Protection Fellowships to future leaders and up to five to postdoctoral scholars. The International Climate Initiative is funding the fellowships.

In 2022, the Initiative (IKI) was transferred to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). The Federal Ministry the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV), as well as the Federal Foreign Office, collaborate on the IKI program.

Benefits of the International Climate Protection Fellowship

The fellowship provides the mutual exchange of expertise, methods, and techniques with hosts in Germany. It offers:

  • A monthly fellowship of €2,170, €2,470 or €2,670 in the program line for prospective leaders respectively – dependent on your training and career level;
  • A monthly fellowship of €2,670 in the program line for postdoctoral researchers
  • Individual sustenance during your stay in Germany
  • Extra financial support for such as for accompanying family members, for travel costs, or for a German language course
  • a three-week introductory event where you can network with other climate protection fellows, take a tour of businesses and research institutions, and attend cultural events in Germany
  • Exclusive alumni sponsorship, particularly to support long-term relationships with your cooperation partners in Germany over the duration of your entire professional career.
  • Host institutes are paid a monthly stipend for research costs of €800 for projects in the natural and engineering sciences or €500 for projects in the humanities and social sciences.

Eligibility Criteria

The foundation invites you to apply for an International Climate Protection Fellowship if you:

  • Are established experts or researchers in the natural or engineering sciences or are keen to tackle legal, economic, health-related, or societal dimensions of climate change
  • Are a national of a non-European developing or transition country and have been primarily residing and working there
  • Completed your first academic degree (Bachelor or equivalent degree) no more than 12 years ago
  • Have had an initial experience in a leadership role and parallel leadership skills
  • Are a potential leader with far-reaching professional experience (at least 48 months at the time of application)
  • Are a postdoctoral researcher with a successfully completed PhD degree in climate protection or climate-relevant resource protection and have been published in academic journals and by academic publishers peer-reviewed according to international standards
  • Have very fair knowledge of English and/or German
  • You are not eligible if you have previously received funding from the Humboldt Foundation.

Selection Process

By the end of June, the Selection Committee aims to send out invitations to qualified candidates for a multi-day virtual selection meeting that will take place in September and give candidates the chance to present their proposals. The recipients of the fellowships will be chosen at this meeting by an impartial Selection Committee.

The selection committee will consider three main factors while selecting the candidates:

Academic and Professional Background:

  • Show your determination and hard work in school and work.
  • Share your achievements in academics and any special qualifications.
  • If you have a doctorate, tell the committee about the quality of your important publications.

Leadership in Climate Protection:

  • Explain your skills in leading efforts to protect the environment and address climate issues.

Research Project:

  • Describe your project’s quality, creativity, and practicality.
  • Show how your research is relevant to climate protection.
  • Explain why your project is important in your home country.
