Opportunity Description

The Global Network of Women Peacebuilders is now accepting applications for the Cora Weiss Fellowship 2022-23 for Young Women Peacebuilders. The fellowship, founded in 2015, aims to foster the development of young women peacebuilders while also ensuring that more young people embrace Cora’s vision of long-term peace and gender equality as essential components of our global society. The fellowship provides opportunities and places for young women to express the challenges and goals of women and girls in their home countries during international policy discussions at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

Fellowship Benefits:

The selected fellows will have the opportunity to work for GNWP for one (1) year in:

  • Global advocacy at the UN to support resolutions and related laws and policies, as well as UN Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR) 2250 on Youth and Peace and Security and 1325 on Women and Peace and Security.
  • Localizing UNSCR 1325, preparing national WPS action, and the Young Women+ Leaders for Peace.
  • Administrative help in all facets of GNWP operations.
  • Research and development of training and advocacy materials on WPS, YPS, and humanitarian action
  • Traveling expenses.
  • Medical insurance.
  • Stipend for the board, local transportation, and other personal costs.

Eligibility Criteria:

The candidate must:

  • Be knowledgeable about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda, UNSCR 2250 on the Peace, Youth, and Security Agenda, and other relevant laws and policies.
  • Have at least two years of experience advocating for policies relating to women’s rights, human rights, promoting peace, and other issues involving social justice, including the Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace, and Security and related laws and regulations.
  • Have at least 2 years of experience implementing programs in a civil society organization working on peacebuilding, human rights, or women’s rights in a developing nation.
  • Must hold a bachelor’s degree in social sciences, women’s or gender studies, or international relations.
  • Have spent at least two years living or working in a developing or conflict-ridden nation.
  • Being highly motivated, having a positive outlook, and managing deadlines and responsibilities.
  • Possess excellent informational and communicational skills and the creativity and enthusiasm to adapt changing strategies that bring women’s, peace, & security issues to the public forum.
  • English language proficiency is necessary. Knowledge of any other UN languages is advantageous.

Note: There are no age restrictions for this fellowship. On the other hand, the fellowship is designed for candidates just starting their careers and represents the perspectives of young people in their nation.

  • Sample of writing about 1500 words.
  • Two recommendation letters.

Selection Criteria:

The following standards will be applied in judging applicants:

  • Understanding of UNSCR 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security and its supporting resolutions, as well as Resolution 2250 on Youth, Peace, and Security Agenda, Sustaining Peace Resolutions, Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Sustainable Development Goals, and related laws and initiatives
  • An intense interest in women’s, peace and security, youth concerns, and the ability to speak and write persuasively about these subjects.
  • Excellent speaking and writing of English is required because the fellowship will be held in New York.
  • experience managing the execution of programs on social justice issues, peacebuilding, and other issues in underdeveloped countries,
  • The capacity to utilize the knowledge and contacts made possible by this fellowship in a comparable environment, such as working for at least two years after the fellowship ends with a civil society group that promotes women, peace, and security;
  • The capacity to travel for a year to New York City;
  • Travel to countries impacted by violence. (Note: Some of the nations where GNWP operates are still dealing with bloody conflicts, are suffering from their aftermath, or have a significant COVID-19 outbreak.)
  • To ensure that its employees, team members, and partners may travel safely, GNWP closely monitors the security and crises in every nation where it works. The Cora Weiss Fellow must sign a contract committing to travel.)
