Fellowship overview

The Digital Curation Institute (DCI) at the Faculty of Information University of Toronto is inviting applications for a one-year funded Fellowship which is awarded to applicants from a wide background who demonstrate interest and competency in the program and work in the broader area of sustainability and curation.

For this Fellowship, DCI is looking a passionate individual who follows creative friction and synergies across disciplinary boundaries, particularly those between the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and engineering, design, computing and technology. The fellows receive the following benefits:

  • A stipend of $10,000 CAD.
  • They will be immersed into the intellectual life at the DCI and the Faculty of Information. As part of this, the Fellow will get the opportunity to be considerably involved with the organization of the funded lecture series at the DCI, which brings prominent international guest speakers to Toronto.

Eligibility conditions

  • The fellowship is open to applicants from a broad range of backgrounds and focus areas worldwide, however, there are some research areas that those applicants whose research relates to, will be preferred (see the link at the bottom of the page).
  • On a yearly basis, The Fellowship is given to an academic faculty member (at any level), adjunct instructor, industry professional, graduate student, or postdoctoral fellow. Each of the categories is considered equally.
  • The University of Toronto especially welcomes applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons, and persons with disabilities, members of sexual minority groups, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of thoughts.

Fellows’ obligations

During the period of the fellowship, fellows are expected to:

  • Present one lecture and/or workshop at the Digital Curation Institute,
  • Recognize the Fellowship in research output (including presentations, publications, software, data, standards and other intellectual property) as a result of this period,
  • Be present on-site at the Digital Curation Institute for an agreed period during the fellowship period (a minimum of three months is expected)
  • Partake in the organization of a lecture or workshop as part of the DCI lecture series,
  • Contribute to the intellectual life of the DCI and the Faculty of Information, and
  • Submit an activity plan at the beginning of the Fellowship and an activity report at the end.

Selection process

All applications will be evaluated by the Director of the DCI and two additional faculty members at the iSchool.

Documents to include

(1) A CV

(2) A brief research proposal (2 single-spaced pages plus references).

Note: the institute will ask only the shortlisted applicants’ referees to send two reference letters under separate cover to the DCI.

In DCI’s view, the strong application demonstrates:

  • The excellence of researcher (considering the career stage; as evidenced through CV and letters),
  • Originality and strength of proposed research (including quality of work plan and outcomes),
  • Relation of the proposal to the areas described above, and
  • Contribution of the proposed fellowship to the DCI and the Faculty of Information (contributions to teaching, research and the community within and outside the Faculty).
