Introduction

Applications are now open for the future food fellowship 2021. ETH Zurich and EPFL have initiated Future Food – A Swiss Research Initiative together with some Switzerland partners to further deepen research and education in the area of food and nutrition sciences. The Future Food Fellowship is a major program under this framework that aims to combine expertise from academic and industrial researches in the fields covered by the initiative and enable fellows to develop solutions for fighting challenges such as affordable nutrition and sustainable food packaging.

Benefits

The organization provides funds for fellows with a maximum duration of three years.

Eligibilities

To be eligible for the Future Food Initiative, the following eligibility criteria must be met:

  • Citizens of any country may apply; there are no age restrictions.
  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. or will complete their doctoral until 30 September 2021 pursuant to the interview date.
  • Applicants who already hold a doctorate must have earned it a maximum of three years before this fellowship submission deadline.
  • Applicants must not have had any studies, research, employment, or other activities (paid or unpaid) at either ETH Zurich or EPFL during the last 12 months preceding the submission deadline.
  • Applicants should not hold a faculty-equivalent position (e.g. assistant professor) in a Switzerland or overseas university.
  • Applications and supporting documentation must be submitted in English.
  • The potential research project must also adhere to the appropriate ethics regulations and conform to the principles of research integrity valid at the host institution.

Evaluation

An Evaluation Board consisting of university representatives and industrial partners will evaluate the proposal and decide on selecting successful applicants.

The underlying criteria include:

  1. The project proposal’s strategic relevance to the topics identified in the call
  2. The project’s relevance and practical effect with regard to the industry partners
  3. Scientific excellence inferred in terms of:
    • Originality of research objective and research plan
    • Appropriateness and quality of research approach/ work method
    • Capability and experience of the applicant in the field of the recommended research
    • Added-value of the partnership between the applicant and the host professor (including industry partners, if appropriate)
    • Practicality of the project in terms of resources, management, and organization.

Qualified applicants should apply by submitting their outstanding proposals online.

The proposals should comprise of:

  • A motivation letter
  • A summary of the research proposal (max. 200 words),
  • A detailed research proposal
  • A letter signed by at least one host ETH Zurich or EPFL professor,
  • Curriculum vitae including a list of publications (max. 2 pages except for publication list separately)
  • Diplomas (including a copy of the doctoral degree), and grade transcripts from all higher education institutions attended by the applicant.
  • A list of five names of prospective external reviewers (name, relationship, and email address). Suggested reviewers should be free of conflict of interest with the intended project.
  • A list of three names of potential recommenders agreeing to submit letters on behalf of the applicants at a later stage.
