Scholarship Overview

Application is now open for the Gadjah Mada International Fellowship (GMIF) program for international students for the academic year of 2021-22 in Indonesia.  It is a scholarship program offered by the University of Gadjah Mada (UGM) to international applicants coming from, ASEAN members and other foreign countries who are in a difficult financial condition to study abroad.

This program is designated to full-time and dual Masters and Doctoral Degrees by coursework and research. Moreover, the program aims to encourage applicants of outstanding academic performance and background who wish to obtain the Master and Doctoral Program in any relevant and agreed field to apply.

Benefits of scholarship

GMIF offers two kinds of scholarships in terms of coverage:

  1. GMIF Partial Coverage Scholarship

This type of scholarship is available to international students who are from any ASEAN, except Indonesia, countries. Recipients of this category must assume responsibility to partially
cover costs associated with their study and stay during their study (living costs usually USD210).

  • Tuition fee waiver (2 semesters for Double Degree Program, 4 semesters for Master Program)
  • 1 semester for the Indonesian Language Program/ INCULS only for those who study the INCULS Program.
  • A two-way international travel cost (direct economy class)
  • Health insurance
  • Limited Stay Permit (ITAS)
  • Thesis research contribution of Rp10.000.000 for Master Program
  1. GMIF Full Coverage Scholarship

International students coming from Asia, Africa, Latin America, The Pacific, Middle East, and East Europe can secure this type of scholarship.

  • Tuition fee (2 semesters for Double Degree Program, 4 semesters for Master Program, and 6 semesters for Doctoral Program)
  • Living cost allowance according to Yogyakarta rate
    • 1 semester for Indonesian Language Program/ INCULS only for those who enroll in the INCULS Program
    • 4 semesters for Master Program
    • 6 semesters for the Doctoral Program
  • Thesis research grant of Rp10.000 for Master Program and Rp15.000 for Ph.D. Program
  • Student Dormitory
  • Other benefits are the same as the partial coverage category above.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for these scholarships, international students must satisfy the following requirements.

  1. Must get admission to the master program or doctoral program (regular, taught in Bahasa Indonesia)in UGM)
  2. Have a bachelor’s degree for the master program or master’s degree for the doctoral program in the fields such as Engineering, Science, Medicine/Health, Geography, Agriculture, Forestry, Animal Science, Economics, Law, Social Sciences and Humanity, or other related fields.
  3. Have a strong bachelor’s degree academic record (GPA of at least 3.0 on 4.0 GPA scale or any other proofs demonstrating candidates’ excellent academic qualification) for master program applicants
  4. Be proficient enough in English (TOEFL score of at least 400 for Master Degree or 450 for Doctoral Program
  5. Ph.D. proposal for doctoral applicants
  6. Provide supporting documents as needed.
  7. Candidates who possess specific professional backgrounds such as academics, policymakers, or professionals will be given in the application.

Evaluation and selection

The Office of International Affairs (OIA) will conduct screening of the applications, review them and invite shortlisted applicants for an interview (through video conference) to further process the application.

  • Copy of academic transcript and graduation certificate/diploma

  • Medical from applicant’s doctor showing good health
  • Proof of English competency (ITP TOEFL, IBT TOEFL or IELTS)

  • Motivation letter
  • Two academic recommendation letters
  • Dissertation proposal for doctoral program applicant
