Scholarship overview

Applications are now open for the Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships for researchers from developing countries. The university offers Ph.D. scholarships to promising Ph.D. students from developing countries who aspire to conduct half of their Ph.D. research at Ghent University (North) and a half at a university in a developing country (South). In addition, Ghent University, through this scholarship, wants to support research groups and centers at the local partner universities. Duration: 24 Months at Ghent + other 24 months outside Ghent in the region under the coverage of this scholarship.

Benefits

Ghent University only sponsors the 24 months duration of the research done at Ghent, and scholars should have full-time co-funding for the other 24 months.

The coverage includes:

The Ghent University promoter receives an amount of fee of € 310/per month of research in Ghent + € 8000 travel fund to cover (part of) the operational costs, as well as part of the traveling expenses of the student and both the Ghent University and the local promoter.

Eligibility criteria

  • Applicants need to come from – and have the citizenship of – a developing country (including Afghanistan)
  • The application proposals must be submitted together by a candidate, a supervisor (promoter) at Ghent University, and a supervisor at the local university (South).
  • There are no limitations to the field of research; however, preference will be given to topics that are relevant to the development.
  • Only degree-seeking students are welcome to apply. Exchange students cannot apply for this scholarship.
  • Ghent University encourages more female researchers to apply for this scholarship.
  • The Ghent University supervisor can support a maximum of 2 applicants per call, providing that they are of a different gender.

Furthermore,

  • The following mobility scheme is compulsory:
  • Chosen scholars will need to start and end with a research stay of 3 -12 months in Ghent.
  • The first research stay in Ghent should begin between 1 October 2021 and 28 February 2022.
  • At least 24 months of locally funded research residence in the South (refer to the country list) must be scheduled in between the first and last research stay in Ghent.

Selection

The Research Council makes a selection of the applications based, in part, on the recommendations made by the members of the Council for Development Cooperation.

Selection criteria:

This scholarship selection process is highly competitive; therefore, the followings are the criteria for evaluation:

  • The qualifications of the applicant
  • The relevance of the research topic to development & capacity building
  • The doctoral project (including the scientific potential of the promoter’s research group(s), including the partnership between Ghent University and the local institute; the scholarly potential of the local institute).

  • Advice on the candidate, explaining the supervisor’s opinion on the capability of the candidate as a future researcher.
  • Advice regarding the ethical and biosafety context of the proposed research subject.
