Overview

Global Network Initiative (GNI) is accepting applications from organizations working in (online press freedom and privacy rights) for its 2021 Emerging Voices Fellowship Program that seeks to enhance online freedom of expression and privacy in the world through collaboration and conversation with different stakeholders. This fellowship is provided to prominent organizations or individuals representing them in the areas mentioned above. Grant value: GNI Fellowship awards a grant of USD10 000 to each of the three applying organizations.

Other benefits

  • With the support of fellowship funding, fellows are to participate in four GNI Board meetings, networking sessions and contribute to GNI activities, such as policy and learning calls on digital rights issues, producing policy analysis pieces, and attendance at regional multi-stakeholder meetings.
  • Work with GNI’s various membership, including information and communications technology (ICT) companies and human rights and media freedom and non-governmental institutions to strengthen common learning, advocacy, and share their own experience with GNI’s unique multi-stakeholder platform.

About the project under this fellowship scheme

The Sustaining Multi-stakeholder Networks for Internet Freedom (SuNI) project intends to preserve and foster online freedom of press and privacy by creating and enhancing connections between civil society and ICT companies. Similarly, the project seeks to improve civil society’s ability to advocate directly with large tech corporations to expand those companies’ policies, as well as to bolster more coordination and cooperation between civil society and ICT companies on common priorities.

Eligibilities

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • The fellowship is open to organizations based in Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • GNI especially accepts applications from reputable organizations as well as newcomers to the digital rights space.
  • Organizations with demonstrable experience or passion and aptitude for working on freedom of expression and privacy issues in the ICT sector.
  • Should be able to participate in three in-person meetings (health and travel restrictions permitting) and one remote (call-in) event, as well as preparation calls.
  • Eagerness to assign one member of the applying organization to be the main source of contact for this fellowship.
