Opportunity Description

Honjo International Scholarship Foundation (HISF) accepts applications from international students who plan to study at a graduate school in Japanese universities for a master’s degree or Ph.D.  Applicants can submit their applications as long as the school’s capacity is filled. Students from all nationalities are encouraged to apply to any field of study. You can directly apply for this scholarship through the foundation without needing to be pre-selected by the university.

Benefits of the Honjo Foundation Scholarships

The scholarships are granted every month throughout the least period a degree takes to be completed, so it depends on the periods as follows:

  • ¥210,000 per month for 1 ~ 2 years degree
  • ¥190,000 per month for three years degree
  • ¥160,000 per month for 4 ~ 5 years of degree

Eligibility Criteria

To be deemed eligible for this scholarship, international students must meet all the requirements listed below:

  • The student should not possess Japanese citizenship
  • The student must enroll as of April 2024 or apply for a course starting from April 2024 at a graduate school in Japan.
  • Those enrolling in a professional graduate school are not eligible to apply.
    However, a student who can submit a research plan is eligible to apply.
  • The duration of enrollment until graduation should be more than 12 months.
  • Candidates applying for the Ph.D. program should start their courses by age 35; for the master’s program, they should be 30 (no exception).
  • The student should be strongly interested in serving in their home country as a future career plan.
  • They should have a deep understanding of international friendship
  • They should have goodwill and attend the events organized by the Foundation
  • They should take part in the network as an alumni member.
  • Able to carry a basic conversation in Japanese because the interviews will be in Japanese (No exception).

Required Documents

Applicants should prepare the following documents:

  • Academic transcript (In Japanese or English; in the case of other languages, a translation should be annexed.
  • The academic transcript of the undergraduate course is compulsory.
  • If you transfer into the university from the College of Technology (kōsen school system), its transcript is also required.
  • Research Proposal: Use the provided sample and write in Japanese (MS Word template).
  • Recommendation letter from your supervisor
  • Documents that show admission, including an admission letter, a letter of acceptance, etc.
  • A face photo of 500kB within .jpg or .gif
  • A two-minute-movie talks about the applicant’s research plan (1GB max size, 2 minutes length, .mp4 or .mov, language of Japanese or English)

What you should include in the proposal are:

  • What is your research going to be on,
  • What and how are you going to help your home country based on what you will have to learn or study in Japan,
  • What are your achievements regarding research, academic, and social contributions?
  • A recommendation letter (in Japanese or English) from the supervisor (who can be a recommender from your country).

Further conditions:

  • Application documents are not acceptable via mailing.
  • The data you have provided can be changed or replaced.
  • The application documentation will not be returned to the applicants.
  • The student cannot change his /her course after the commencement of the scholarship period.
  • Those whose enrollment period is less than one year are ineligible to apply.
