Fellowship overview

Applications are currently open for the Harrison Middleton University (HMU) Fellowship in Ideas. The HMU Fellowship in Ideas is a writing and discussion project in the humanities intended for a new university graduate from any field who has a passion for the humanities, interdisciplinary dialogue, and intellectual and professional enrichment. The roles & responsibilities of fellows

Over the period of nine months, the HMU Fellow in Ideas will:

  • Attend virtual Socratic discussions with university faculty.
  • Prepare two entries to the Harrison Middleton University Blog.
  • Publish a book review in HMU: Dialogues, Harrison Middleton University’s twice-a-year newsletter.

Fellowship benefits

The fellows of the ‘HMU Fellowship in Ideas’ will enjoy the following benefits:

  • A stipend of USD500.
  • Get the chance to participate in virtual Socratic discussions with university faculty.
  • Contribute online publication in the HMU Blog and HMU: Dialogues.
  • After the completion of the Fellowship period, a complimentary library of five Great Books Foundation publications.
  • It leaves emerging scholars exposed to the history of ideas in Western civilization, networking opportunities amongst an array of academics, lifelong learners, readers, and intellectuals from a wide range of fields.
  • And, credited authorship in two university publications

Eligibilities

The successful candidate for the fellowship must:

  • Have earned a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral degree (in any area).
  • Demonstrate an interest in the humanities and the great ideas of Western civilization.
  • Enjoy exceptional reading, writing, and communication abilities.
  • Exhibit commitment to writing two blog entries for the HMU Blog and one book review, on the basis of a Great Books Foundation publication to be identified for HMU: Dialogues.

Selection procedure

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to participate in an interview, either by telephone or Skype.

Notification of result

The successful candidate will be informed by Harrison Middleton University on or before December 1, 2020.

How can you apply?

You can apply for the fellowship by providing the following to the HMU via email:

  • A completed application form.
  • A biographical statement NOT exceeding 500 words shedding light on your background as a student, your enthusiasm in the humanities, and your interest in the current program.
  • A suitably cited expository essay of NOT more than 1500 words plus works cited page, showing your interest to a great idea in the humanities linked to one of these deliberations: imaginative literature, natural sciences, philosophy, and religion, and social science.
