Overview of the fellowship

The applications for the Henry Hart Rice Urban Studies Fellowship are open now. The fellowship, endowed by the Rice Family Foundation and organized by New York University, Wagner Graduate School of Public Service (NYU Wagner), is granted to extraordinary students who show and have a commitment to bringing their scholarship and knowledge to focus on significant urban issues. Also, the fellowship offers complete tuition support for two new students each year.

The fellowship is named after Henry Hart Rice, a senior statesman, public servant, author, and lecturer. Besides, Mr. Rice conceived and developed projects throughout the US and Canada.

Criteria of the fellowship for potential applicants

Applicants meeting the following criteria are eligible to apply:

  • Resolute dedication, emotional maturity, flexibility under difficult conditions
  • Demonstrable success in a first career

Evaluation criteria

The organization decides on the admission of applicants on the basis of a holistic review of all application elements—your previous academic history, work experience, written and video essays.

In general, it looks for strong academic history, demonstrated commitment in public service, and capacity for impact.

Selection process

Candidates selected as fellowship semi-finalists will be invited to participate in Skype interviews in early-to-mid February 2021.

And, those who advance into the final stage of fellowship as finalists will be invited for a face-to-face interview with the Selection Committee in New York City in late March 2021.

Note: NYU Wagner will facilitate a skype interview for those finalists who cannot travel to New York. The panel of judges in the committee will be composed of representatives from supporting organizations, faculty, and NYU Wagner alumni.
