Fellowship overview

Application is now ongoing for the Ph.D. fellowship intelWATT H2020 project in the Netherlands.

IHE Delft Institute for Water Education was recently offered a grant by the European Commission for the project “Intelligent Water Treatment Technologies” for water preservation combined with simultaneous energy production and material recovery in energy-intensive industries (intelWATT). Moreover, this project focuses on developing innovative, efficacious, smart separation technologies used in energy and water-intensive industries. In this regard, the Water Supply, Sanitation and Environmental Engineering (WSSEE) department of IHE Delft is hiring a Ph.D. fellow, who will graduate in co-operation with Delft University of Technology.

Deadline: 10 October 2020

Duration: 3.5 to four years (2020-2024)

Expected starting date: November 1, 2020


The program support includes an allowance of 1270.08 Euros/month (net).

In addition,

Ph.D. fellowship information:

  • The Ph.D. fellow will work directly with the Project leader for IHE Delft, Dr. Nirajan Dhakal, and will be based at the WSSEE Department of IHE delft in Delft, The Netherlands.
  • The Ph.D. fellow will contribute to the activities and deliverables of the project under the observation of the university’s Delft WSSEE Department Professors.
  • The fellow will be attending the project meetings (in Europe).
  • The Ph.D. fellow will be expected to publish the achieved results in peer-reviewed journals and to present the results at international conferences.

Requirements of the position

  • The Ph.D. fellow must hold an MSc degree in chemical engineering with a robust focus on desalination. (If a candidate with this profile will not emerge, candidates, having a background in, civil engineering, environmental engineering, and environmental sciences will also be considered.)
  • The Ph.D. fellow must be used to working in the laboratory; prior experience on water quality analyses (both chemical and microbiological) and knowledge of the operation of pilot plants is required.
  • The Ph.D. fellow must have proficiency in oral and written English;
  • The fellow must be able to work independently and as a member of a team; and
  • The candidate must be creative, flexible, and enthusiastic to learn and to develop his /her scientific network.
