Overview

The applications are open for the 6th International Labor Organization (ILO) Global Media Competition on Global Migration and Fair Recruitment 2020. The competition honors exquisite media coverage on labor migration and fair recruitment and intends to promote quality reporting on labor migration issues. Therefore, professional journalists, media experts, and student journalists worldwide can apply to participate in the contest. This year, ILO encourages explicitly the participants to highlight the impact of COVID-19 on migrant workers and their families.

Prizes and benefits

The competition will grant three prizes for professional journalists or media experts on the topic of labor migration and fair employment of migrant workers:

  • Two awards will be presented for a published media piece
  • One award will be given for a synopsis.
  • One prize to a student journalist for a synopsis on the topic of labor migration and/or fair employment of refugee workers.For the winners, a choice of cash prizes between (USD1,200 in the published media piece and USD500 for the synopsis category) or a paid fellowship to participate in a course in 2021 on fair recruitment or labor migration at the ILO’s International Training Centre.

Eligibilities

  • For the professional awards, media experts, and professional journalists who are 18 years of age and higher can apply.
  •  To enter for the student award, students from journalism schools/universities who are currently studying a journalism faculty or university curricula are qualified to apply.
  • For entering the contest, filling in the Online Entry Form is a must for all participants. No postal submissions or e-mail will be entertained.
  • Entries should be in one of the following two categories: i) Professional or ii) Student. Professionals can submit entries in two subcategories, a) “Published media pieces” or b) “Synopsis,” and students can only submit entries in the “synopsis” subcategory.
  • A synopsis should be a proposal for a media piece still having the capacity to be expanded, and should consist of: 1) the title; 2) the region/country where the story will be located; 3) the type of media piece; 4) the thematic area; 5) methodology/sources of information; 6) budget (if available); 7) summary/presentation of the project (no more than 4000 words).
  • Applicants can submit their piece in the following categories: written press, photo essay, multimedia, video, and/or radio.
  • Entries that are published between 1 November 2019 and 31 October 2020 to be eligible for the competition.
  • Submissions in any language are welcome; however, any submission must be accompanied by an English, French, or Spanish translation if the submitted material or parts of it are in languages other than English.
  • And, a maximum of two entries could be submitted by any participant.

Evaluation criteria

A jury of experts in international migration and journalism will select the winners judged on the following criteria:

  • Exhibiting creativity and accurateness;
  • Using sufficient terminology that protects migrants;
  • Promoting non-discrimination; and
  • Underscoring the benefits of well-governed, secure labor migration, and fair recruitment.
