Opportunity Description

The University of South Australia awards two PhD area-specific scholarships in the area of nanotechnology to research students. Swift developments in areas like materials science, Nano-biotechnology, biomaterials, sensor technology and advanced computing are resulting in new products and processes which are drastically revolutionizing the Australian developed manufacturing industry.

Given the description, The PhD projects under this scholarship will be centered on understanding the wetting behavior of Nano-engineered surfaces. Through a distinctive set of experiments, including advanced nanofabrication, the project will examine the mechanisms by which topographical and chemical properties of a solid surface prompt the formation of nanostructure-induced air pockets and how these events define surface wettability. The experimental proof will then be used to create a model capable to predict wetting behavior from readily-obtainable surface descriptors.
