About the award

Applications are now open for the “King Hamad Youth Empowerment Award to Achieve the SDGs” jointly organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs Kingdom of Bahrain and UNDP. The Kingdom of Bahrain offers launches this award, in addition to other pioneering initiatives, in the field of youth empowerment and skills development, believing that youth are the engine and the main driver of the developmental process and that they are the mean and purpose of development. Thus, in view of such conviction, this award aims to put youth on a trajectory of a high level of creativity and excellence.

Value and benefits of the award

There are two categories:

  • The award amounts to $20,000 in the Youth Action category (five awards) and US$5,000 in the Youth Enablers category (3 awards). The Award will be granted in full as a one-time grant after the awarding ceremony.
  • All winners of the King Hamad Award will be invited to attend the award ceremony that will take place in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
  • Flights and accommodation to attend the awards presentation will be covered by MoYSA for each of the 8 winners.
  • And, all winners agree to participate in media sessions and statements that MoYSA or the UNDP may require after receipt of the award.

Eligibility criteria

  • This award category is open to applicants from all UN member countries.
  • Applicants could be individual youth above the age of 15 years and below the age of 35 years;
  • A youth-led organization, in which at least 50% of current management/leadership positions go to those under the age of 35) is eligible to apply; or
  • A youth-focused entity in which at least 90% of resources serve youth above 15 and under 35 years of age can apply.

Evaluation process

Evaluation of submissions will include three stages as follows:

1st stage: Pre-vetting by the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs (MoYSA) in the Kingdom of Bahrain to evaluate eligibility.

2nd stage: Initial evaluation by a global jury of youth and development professionals.

3rd stage: Final evaluation by an upper panel of prominent public figures

Criteria for evaluation

The award will recognize an exceptional and successful development initiative by youth in one of the 5 core aspects of sustainable development (5Ps) covered in Agenda 2030, namely:

People: Eradicating poverty and hunger in all forms;

Prosperity: Ensuring prosperous and rewarding lives in harmony with nature;

Planet: Safeguarding our planet’s natural resources and climate for future generations;

Peace: Raising peaceful, fair and inclusive societies; and

Partnership: Building solid partnerships to implement Agenda 2030.

In evaluating submissions, the jury will take into account the extent to which the development initiative has been informed by, or upholds, where pertinent, key principles of holistic, sustainable development underlying the vision of Agenda 2030, including:

  • Integrated
  • No one behind
  • Risk-informed
  • Global outlook
  • Gender Balance

In presenting the development initiative, submission narratives clarifying the initiative are expected to provide proof of and/or illustrate the following:

  • Impact
  • Measurable results
  • Validation of impact
  • Previous recognition
  • Scalability
  • Sustainability
  • Innovation
