The applications are open for Massey University Doctoral Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded for inspiring doctoral research and are open to both New Zealand and international students. Additionally, the university awards these scholarships on the basis of academic merit and strategic research priorities.

These scholarships are for full-time and part-time candidates enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Doctor of Clinical Psychology, or Doctor of Social Work.

Scholarship value

The total sum value of the scholarship is $75,000.

Benefits

  • A stipend of $25,000 per year for full-time candidates.
  • Payment of tuition and non-tuition fees to a maximum of 36 months of full-time study.
  • A stipend of $15,000 per year for part-time candidates and payment of tuition and non-tuition fees to a maximum of 60 months. The tuition fees payment is according to the domestic rate.

Note: For international awardees, non-tuition fees include insurance for the candidate only.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants meeting these criteria are eligible to apply for the available scholarships:

  • Should have a conditional or unconditional admission placement offer in a doctoral program at Massey University, or,
  • Be enrolled in the provisional year of a doctoral degree at the time of application closing date (before confirmation of registration).
  • Both full-time and part-time candidates are eligible to apply.

Applicants from a country where there English is not the native language must obtain a minimum English Language proficiency level (may vary depending on specific programs).

The acceptable English language proficiency requirements at Massey University are as follows:

  2. IELTS
  3. PTE Academic

Selection criteria

Applicants with a grade average of A- (7.0 on a 9-point scale) or equivalent will normally be given consideration. Moreover, candidates must also exhibit that their research adheres to the strategic priorities of the University, College, and research supervisor(s).

More specifically, the following factors are important in the evaluation process:

  • Independent research experience
  • Supervisor’s evaluation, as per the application.
  • Publications as defined in the PBRF Definition of Research
  • Creative works
  • Professional and/or industry experience and relevant awards
  • Ranking of the university or discipline

Selection process

College-based selection committees will assess, rank, and recommend candidates to the University Scholarships Committee (USC) for the award of the scholarship. In recommending the allocation of the scholarship, the selection committee may consider other scholarships and bursaries held by the applicant.

The University Scholarships Committee’s decision is final.

Further conditions of the scholarship

  • Awardees need to have enrolled in their approved course of research as a full-time or part-time candidate at Massey University.
  • Applicants should advise and/or inform the USC of changes to candidacy, including suspensions from the study, changes to part-time or full-time status, or withdrawal from studies.
  • Doctoral scholarships may be dismissed or suspended at any time at the discretion of the USC for the following reasons:
  • Unsatisfactory academic progress in the candidate’s approved program of research, or,
  • Breach of any of Massey University’s rules or regulations by the candidate.
  • Ph.D. scholarships may be held in relation to other scholarships, supports, awards, and prizes, up to the value of $18,000 yearly.
  • Full-time candidates receiving a doctoral scholarship are likely to engage in 40-50 hours per week of study, but may be employed on a part-time basis of nearly 500 hours each year.
  • And, part-time candidates in receipt of a doctoral scholarship are expected to take 20-30 hours per week of study, but may be employed approximately 1500 hours per year.
