Fellowship overview

The McDonnell Academy at Washington University in St. Louise offers up to two fellowships to outstanding individuals who demonstrate significant potential for leadership and achievement to be admitted as fellows in the Mark S. Wrighton Leadership Fellows Program. Therefore, the Wrighton Leadership Fellows program aims to help further expand leadership capacity through the routes of study, mentorship, and practice.

Funding for this program is provided by a McDonnell Academy endowment.

Program format

  • The program will allow fellows to help design their own program.
  • The program may include granting fellows the special opportunity to interact with renowned leaders in their area, to receive support to participate in an extra-curricular activity, or to receive funds to expand an initiative that they are spearheading.
  • Faculty may propose optional readings or other types of content.
  • Mark S. Wrighton Leadership Fellows will have the opportunity to foster their leadership capacity through activities and engagements.
  • A proposal explaining a plan and purpose for such activities will be part of the application process.

Program guideline

  • Each spring, McDonnell Academy selects up to two scholars as Mark S. Wrighton Leadership Fellows enjoying tailored opportunities for leadership development.
  • The academy will prefer the doctoral degree program applicants, but applicants in master’s programs may also apply.
  • Every scholar of the academy is eligible to apply.

Eligibility criteria

Potential candidates will display a demonstrated record of:

  • Leadership in the Academy, Washington University, or the broader community, and a commitment to intercultural cooperation.
  • The motivation for facing new challenges,
  • Cooperating with people from diverse national and disciplinary backgrounds.

Selection of the fellows

An advisory committee appointed by the Director of the McDonnell Academy will select the Wrighton Fellows. It will decide on fellows’ selection according to application materials such as a written proposal and interviews.

Result notification

Results will be published soon after the interview.
