The Department of Economics, Uppsala University, offers a four-year Ph.D. program in economics to 10 potential graduates of master’s degrees who want to pursue a doctoral degree in Sweden. Outline of the program

The Ph.D. Program in Economics consists of 240 ECTS, of which 105 ECTS is coursework, and 135 ECTS pertains to thesis work. In addition to the required courses, many optional courses are available in collaboration with the Stockholm School of Economics and Stockholm University.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for this Ph.D. scholarship, applicants need to fulfill the admission requirements below.

General requirements

  • The applicant must have obtained a passing grade for courses corresponding to at least (four years of full-time studies), including (one-year of full-time studies) at a (Master’s level not necessarily in economics), or have achieved the equivalent knowledge in an alternative format either in Sweden or overseas.

Specific requirements

  • Besides the general admission requirements, the applicant must also have a minimum of 90 ECTS in economics (compared to the European system) or have obtained the equivalent knowledge in an alternative way, either in Sweden or abroad.
  • All applicants must fulfill the admission requirements by the time of admission, however not necessarily at the time of the application.
  • Applicants who expect to meet both the requirements above no later than early august 2021 are welcome to apply.

Graduation requirements

To earn the Ph.D. degree, the student must obtain a passing grade in all courses and must have completed a Ph.D. thesis defended in a public disputation. The articles can be either single-authored or co-authored.

Notification of admission decision

Applicants will receive a notification on their admission by mid-march 2021. The program will start on August 16, 2021.
