Radcliffe Institute Fellowship 2024-25 applications are now open for applicants from worldwide. Harvard Radcliffe Institute provides fellowships to outstanding scientists, scholars, public intellectuals, authors, experts, and artists who make a difference in their professional fields and the larger world.

The fellowships are available to fellows who wish to pursue a 9-month fellowship at Harvard University, U.S. Also, the fellows will have access to Harvard’s unmatched resources, develop and share their work progress, challenge each other’s opinions, and support each other’s desires.

Benefits of Fellowship

Fellows will receive the following benefits by applying to the Redcliffe Institute Fellowship:

  • A stipend of $78,000 for fellows
  • Additional $5,000 allowance for research expenses

Fellowship Program Details

  • Radcliffe Institute fellowship awardees may benefit from in-residence for nine months in the U.S.  Fellows should have fully devoted themselves and full commitments to the work outlined in their proposal.
  • Fellows reside in Greater Boston during their residential fellowship.
  • Radcliffe Institute offers a Fellow an office or studio in Byerly Hall and full-time Harvard appointments for visiting fellows. The Institute will also provide them access to Harvard University’s various resources, such as libraries, athletic facilities, and housing. The Institute may also cover their hourly wages if fellows would like to hire Harvard bachelor’s scholars as Research Partners.
  • All fellows should engage actively with their cohort’s co-workers and join fully as a member of the Radcliffe community. Therefore, all fellows should present their work-in-progress in the format of a private talk or a public lecture for their cohort, besides participating in the presentations of other fellows during that academic year (up to two words per week).

Eligibility Criteria

All candidates should fulfill the following criteria to apply for the Radcliffe Institute Fellowship:

  • The program is open to scientists, scholars, authors, public intellectuals, and artists with unique differences in their professional areas and the larger world
  • Applicants can be from any country from around the world.
  • Candidates can apply as individuals or teams of two to three people working on the same project.
  • Radcliff seeks diversity in many dimensions, such as discipline, career stage, race and ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation, country or source, and ideological perspective.
  • Applicants in humanities and social sciences must:
    1. They have received their doctorate (or appropriate terminal degree) in their proposed project at least two years before their appointment as a fellow (December 2022 for the 2024-25 fellowship year).
    2. They must have published a monograph or two articles in journals or edited collections.
    3. Candidates applying to mathematics, engineering, and science should:
      1.  They received their doctorate in the proposed project area at least two years before their appointment as a fellow (December 2022 for the 2024-25 fellowship year).
      2. Fellows should have published a minimum of five articles in refereed journals. Most science, engineering, and math fellows have published dozens of articles. Candidates should demonstrate a strong body of independent writing and research.
    4. Applicants for creative arts must meet the field-specific criteria:
      • Film and Video: They must have independent work with significant achievement exhibited in museums or galleries, video or film festivals, or T.V. broadcasts.
      • Visual arts: Show strong evidence of achievement with at least five years of professional work as an artist.
      • Fiction and nonfiction: candidates should evidence prove of one of the following items:
  1. One or more published books
  2. Publication contract of a book-length manuscript
  3. Or three published shorter works that must be longer than newspaper articles.
      • Poetry: Candidates in the poetry category should have published at least 20 poems in the last five years or published a book of poetry and must be completing a manuscript.
      • Journalism: Applicants in this discipline are required to have worked professionally as a journalist for at least five years.
      • Playwriting: Applicants in this discipline must have a significant body of independent work. The work will include, most typically, plays produced or under option.
      • Music Composition: It is desirable, but not required, for applicants in music composition to have a Ph.D. or D.M.A. Most importantly, the applicant must show strong evidence of achievement as a professional artist with a record of recent performances.

Evaluation Criteria

Each application will pass a two-tiered review process as follows:

  1. First, experts in the related field will evaluate the submitted applications
  2. Next, a multidisciplinary selection committee selects diverse fellows with the highest achievement and potential.

The selection committees will consider the following conditions and selection criteria while evaluating the applications:

  • The proposed project’s importance and quality
  • A strong track record or exceptional promise proves applicants’ innovative and intellectual potential.
  • Project proposals should be novel, well-conceived, imaginative, and practical.
  • The program seeks diversity in every dimension, including geography, ethnicity and race, ideological perspective, and stage in career.

Application Procedure for the Radcliffe Institute Fellowship

  • Project proposal, with bibliography, when suitable (150 words abstract).

Work samples

*For applicants in the humanities and social sciences: If you have completed writing relevant to your proposed project, please include that (even if it is unpublished). Otherwise, please upload a published article or book chapter. The maximum length is 40 pages.

  • Applicants in science, engineering, and mathematics should submit three article reprints.
  • For applicants in the creative arts, our writing/work sample guidelines vary by discipline.
  • Applicants in fiction and nonfiction should submit a recent book chapter, short story, manuscript, or article, approximately 30 pages total. All material must be relevant to your project. If not associated with it, the published material is required.
  • Applicants in poetry should submit up to 10 poems.
  • Applicants in journalism should submit three substantive published articles, approximately 30 pages in total. Applicants in this discipline may also submit up to 15 minutes of work on YouTube, Vimeo, or Soundcloud on the Journalism Supporting Materials Upload page.
  • Applicants in playwriting should submit one play or a section of a play, no more than 30 pages total.
  • Applicants in visual arts should submit 12 images and, if applicable, up to 3 moving-image excerpts on the Visual Arts Supporting Materials Upload page.
  • Applicants in film and video should submit a maximum of 15 minutes of work on YouTube or Vimeo on the Film and Video Supporting Materials Upload page. Please edit your clips so that they do not exceed 15 minutes. Alternatively, if you don’t edit your sample, please provide the correct timestamps for review not exceeding 15 minutes.
  • Applicants in music should submit one to three samples of recent compositions on Soundcloud, YouTube, or Vimeo on the Music Supporting Materials Upload page. All illustrations should have written scores, except for electronic or improvisational work.
  • Practitioners should submit a sample relevant to their proposed project.
