Overview of the program

Applications are open for the Smithsonian Institution (SI) Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biodiversity Genomics in the U.S. The program promotes collaborative research in these fields involving comparative genomic approaches such as phylogenomics, population genomics, metagenomics, or transcriptomics, and has a component that involves significant bioinformatics analysis. So, if you are a specialist or researcher in this field, you can apply and be a fellow of SI.

Benefits

  • The fellowship stipend for Postdoctoral and Senior Fellows is $50,400 per year (twelve months). Stipends are awarded for periods of less than a year.
  • Allowances to help cover the fellow’s research-related costs and for temporary relocation to the Smithsonian are possible, In addition to the stipend.
  • A maximum research stipend of $4,000 is available.
  • The amount of allowance awarded will be determined depending upon the budget and justification presented by the applicant.

Eligibility criteria

  • Applicants must declare to carry out research in-residence for a period of 12 to 24 months.
  • Applicants must have completed or been near completion of their doctorate.
  • Awardees who have not completed the Ph.D. at the time of applying must provide evidence of completion of the degree before the commencement of fellowship.
  • Applicants interested in undertaking research at SI facilities are strongly encouraged to contact potential advisors/hosts at any of the Smithsonian’s various Museums and Research Institutes before proposal preparation and submission.
  • Smithsonian accepts applicants from the ages of fourteen and higher.
