Who Can Apply?

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • General Guidelines: The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship is not for students pursuing a degree. Ensure you and your host institution meet all criteria; otherwise, your application will be ineligible.
  • Applicant Criteria: Applicants can be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or foreign citizens. Those not Canadian citizens or residents must hold the fellowship at a Canadian institution. Canadians who obtained their degree abroad can only have a fellowship in Canada. Canadians who earned their degree in Canada can choose between Canadian or foreign institutions.
  • Degree Completion Window: For the 2024-25 fellowships, applicants must have completed their degree between September 15, 2021, and September 30, 2025. Those without proof of completion by application time must provide it by October 15, 2025.
  • Extensions for Eligibility Window: The eligibility window can be extended by up to three years for interruptions such as parental leave, illness, military service, or other circumstances. Extensions must align with the duration of interruptions and must occur post-degree completion and before the application deadline.
  • Host Institution Criteria: Eligible hosts include Canadian and foreign universities, research hospitals, colleges, and not-for-profit organizations with research capabilities. Canadian governments and for-profit entities cannot host.
  • Other Restrictions: Applicants with prior CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC postdoctoral fellowships must end that funding by September 30, 2025, before starting the Banting fellowship. Early termination of another fellowship for Banting is not allowed. Dual applications for Banting and other agency-specific fellowships are permitted if the proposed research aligns with the respective agencies.
  • Employment Restrictions: Applicants cannot hold or be on leave from a tenure-track faculty position.
  • Same Institution Applications: Banting fellowships rarely go to applicants staying at the same institution or environment where they completed their degree. If doing so, applicants must justify their choice.
  • Fellowship Details:
    • Must start between April 1 and October 1 post-application year.
    • Tenable for two years at the supporting institution.
    • It cannot overlap with another tri-agency training award.
    • It can only be held once in a lifetime.
