UNESCO once again presents a unique opportunity for all individuals or groups to participate in advancing “Ethics of Environment” with the focus on environmental sustainability and ethics of climate change.

UNESCO invites non-governmental organizations in official partnership with UNESCO, the Members States in consultation with their National Commissions, non-governmental, academic, professional organizations who are active in ethics of technology and science, expert bodies and partners of UNESCO, to recommend candidates for UNESCO Avicenna Prize for Ethics in Science 2019.

The Executive Board of UNESCO established the Avicenna Prize in 2003 and it is in its 166th session in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Eligibility:

  • Must be an individual or an existing institution
  • The Prize aims to award activities in the ethics in science (applicants should have experience in the following):
    • Research on issues that are brought up as a result of technological advances and superior ethical scholarly reflection
    • Advice contributions to policymakers regarding ethical questions in research and development to lay the foundation and upkeep for science ethics policies and committees.
    • Accomplishments in training and developing education regarding the ethical aspects of science.
    • Exceptional works in nurturing public awareness, science communication and conducting debates regarding ethics of science and technology,

Required documents:

  • If the applicant is not an individual but an organization/institution, the candidates should provide a copy of the candidate’s General Rules/Statutes at prize@useco.org
  • Nomination form
  • At least two support letters (recommendation) whether in letters or emails from a reputable person or organization.
    • The supporter should present their own views on the candidate’s achievements, especially in relations to the topic of the program.
    • Supporters should provide details of themselves, such as telephone numbers and emails.
  • List of enclosed annexes such as books, publications, digital supports, and other materials that helps your application relevantly. (you can choose to send it through postal services)
  • List of translations: If it is in English or French, please send it without any more work. However, if it is not in English, please send it partially translated to English or French or explain it in details either in English or French.
