Scholarship overview

Application is now open for the Graduate School of Social Sciences, University of Bamberg starter scholarships which is an excellent opportunity for scholars and graduates to pursue their PhD degree in Germany, and remain as regular members at the host institution.  For the next year, it offers up to four starter scholarships for doctoral applicants to conduct research and study at the university.

Benefits

  • The scholarship is financially worth 1,468 EUR per month.
  • The Starter Scholarship holders will receive support throughout their tenure in finding further funding opportunities. This support will be in form of workshops, mentoring, advisory services and access to a robust research environment.

Who are eligible to apply?

  • Highly eligible doctoral graduates in the fields of Sociology, Psychology, Education, Political Science, Labor and Educational Economics, Statistics and Demography.
  • Graduates of related subjects with a vigorous Social Science background are also encouraged to apply.
  • Candidates holding a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in one of the above-mentioned subjects or those who are about to graduate before the admission date (1 April 2021) can apply.
  • Applicants with an excellent knowledge of English. If English is not your native tongue, you will need to provide evidence of English language proficiency.
  • Candidates whose proposed doctoral research topic suits thematically or are closely related to at least one/two of the four or more academic pillars of BAGSS.
  • The school welcomes applications from all backgrounds.

Starter scholarship holders’ responsibilities

During that time the beneficiaries need to develop an outstanding research proposal that will be used to apply for further funding, e.g. for scholarships from the many German sponsorship organizations or the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Evaluation criteria

The selection is highly competitive with appropriate attention to diversity and equal opportunity. Therefore, the two main criteria are:

  • The candidate’s demonstrated record of academic excellence, and
  • The Graduate’s ability to ensure decent, research-led supervision.

In particular,

  • Application is timely, complete, formally precise, and in the stated fashion.
  • The statutory criteria for admission to doctoral studies at Bavarian universities are satisfied.
  • The research topic for the doctoral thesis matches the academic profile of the Graduate School.
  • At least one qualifying faculty member of the Graduate School agrees to supervise the suggested thesis topic.
  • The whole application has been deemed as excellent by a jury of academic assessors from the Graduate School in contest with other applications.
