Applications are open for the University of Oslo (UiO) Ph.D. Research Fellowship in Political Science. The Department of Political Science at UiO offers two Ph.D. Research Fellowships in (peace in conflict research). Successful candidates will work as Ph.D. Fellows on the project “Resilience Building: Social Resilience, Gendered Dynamics, and Local Peace in Prolonged Conflicts,” funded by the European Research Council. Furthermore, fellows will be part of the Faculty’s Ph.D. program, and the work undertaken will be expected to end up in a Ph.D. in Political Science.

Format of the program

Successful fellows will have a 25% teaching obligation in the Department where teaching is divided into five sections: public policy and administration, comparative politics, political theory, international politics, and research methods.

About the research project

The Resilience Building project studies the reasons and repercussions of social resilience in prolonged armed conflicts, emphasizing on Nigeria, Central African Republic, South Sudan, and Kenya.

Moreover, it seeks how civilians and communities shape social resistance and adjust to conflict dynamics in ways that avoid or alleviate violence, how they keep the resilience and curb renewed vulnerability to conflict re-escalation, and also how social resilience affects peacebuilding and development.

Eligibilities

Candidates with the following qualities can apply for the fellowship.

Mandatorty:

  • A Master’s degree in political science or a closely related field. To qualify for the position, the prior education must be equivalent to five years at the university level in Norway in a relevant field, with two years (120 credits) at the master’s level.
  • Outstanding verbal and written English language skills. The Ph.D. thesis will be written in English.
  • Independent and as well teamwork ability, and inclination to contribute to administrative and organizational working responsibilities, e.g., the organization of workshops, events, and other research and outreach activities.

Desirable: 

Also, candidates having some of the following qualifications will be at an advantage:

(1) Understanding of politics or research experience in one of the project’s country cases and willingness to conduct fieldwork in at least one of them;

(2) Language skills relevant for carrying out research in one of the four countries (e.g. French for the Central African Republic)

(3) Methodological capabilities and training in qualitative and quantitative research techniques (specifically interviewing, survey research, statistics), and

(4) Personal fit and motivation for working within the project.

In evaluating applications, academic and personal competencies, and the Ph.D. research outline will be carrying more weight than other disciplinary and general criteria. Therefore, the priority is to hire the applicant with the best outlook for developing into an exceptional researcher and contribute to the project’s research agenda and outcomes over the coming 4-year period.
