Overview

The applications are currently open for the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) 2023/24 Peace Scholar Fellowship. USIP’s Peace Scholar Fellowship program grants non-residential fellowships to students enrolled in accredited U.S. universities who are working on doctoral dissertations on topics largely related to conflict management, peace building, and related security studies. Currently, the program offers nearly up to 18 scholarships each year, supporting both the research and writing stages of the dissertation. Also, this program partners with the Minerva Research Initiative to support additional fellowships relating to topics on peace and security studies.

Award Value:

Up to 18 Peace Scholars may receive funding from USIP for a non-residential, 10-month fellowship. For the academic year, Peace Scholars will be given stipends of up to $20,000 that will be paid in three installments directly to them. Awards for Peace Scholars cannot be postponed.

Who can submit a proposal?

  • The competition is open to Ph.D. candidates enrolled in US universities who have successfully completed all required classwork and any required comprehensive exams.
  • Non-U.S. citizens may apply, but they must be Ph.D. candidates currently enrolled at a U.S. university. International and satellite university students are ineligible.
  • All applicants must be Ph.D. candidates at the time of application. Students pursuing a master’s degree or other graduate coursework are ineligible to apply.
  • There is no age requirement for Peace Scholars.

Application Questions:

  1. Contribution
    What about the research is unique? What particular advancements in the fields of conflict resolution, peacemaking, and related security studies will the project make? How does your research improve Minerva’s and/or USIP’s comprehension of the social, cultural, behavioral, and/or political forces that influence the problems and dynamics of conflict? (400 words)
  2. Relevance
    Describe how the USIP mission and/or the Minerva Research Initiative mission interact with your dissertation. Describe how your project relates to conflict management, peace building, and related security studies in terms of theory, policy, or practice. Applications won’t be taken into consideration for the competition if they are unrelated to the priorities or problem areas of USIP or the Minerva Research Initiative. (400 words)
  3. Research Integrity
    In order to test your hypotheses or provide answers to the defining questions of your project, describe how you will analyze the research evidence. Describe your working methods. Describe how your research’s conclusions can be applied to different periods of time, geopolitical regions, or other aspects of socioculture. Will your research be predictive in nature? What is the project’s overall significance and what are the likely lessons to be learned from it? (500 words)
  4. Work Plan
    Give a timeline outlining the expected completion date for your dissertation. List the parts of your work (research, data collection, analysis, writing, etc.) that are complete, as well as the tasks that still need to be done. Please be as realistic as you can when thinking about the work that can be accomplished during the fellowship. The Institute anticipates that scholars will complete the work outlined in the schedule or in accordance with any subsequent agreements reached with program staff. (500 words)

How to apply?

To apply for a Peace Scholar Fellowship, applicants have to complete a two-step process.

1. Registration

All applicants must first register for an account with the USIP HERE. After that, login credentials and instructions for FLUXX will be sent through email, enabling applicants access to the online application portal. It might take up to 48 hours to process registration credentials. Please register early!

2. Application 

After registrations, applicants must apply via the FLUXX system. On the application form, please choose the funding source for which you wish to be considered: (1) the USIP Peace Scholar Fellowship only; (2) Minerva Research Initiative Peace and Security Fellowship only; or (3) no preference.

Every year, Peace Scholars are required to attend a workshop. When the Peace Scholar’s dissertation is finished and approved by their committee, they must send a copy to USIP at PeaceScholarFellows@usip.org.

Selection Criteria:

Applications will be chosen based on the quality of the proposed research and its potential to address one of the major initiatives or research priorities listed in the links above, thus making original contributions to the field.

Applications won’t be taken into consideration for the competition if they are unrelated to the priorities or problem areas of USIP or the Minerva Research Initiative.
