The Government of Canada established The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships in 2008 to empower Canada’s ability to accept doctoral students from all over the globe and make Canada the global center of excellence in research and higher learning. Applicants who are willing to study their graduate studies in social science and humanities, natural science and/or engineering and health in Canada can apply.

Benefits of Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships:

  • For three years, scholars will receive an annual grant of $50,000 and the opportunity to complete their PhDs at any Canadian institution of their choosing.
  • Depending on the applicant’s academic standing, research proposal, and leadership abilities, his or her studies will either be totally or partially sponsored.

Eligibilities:

  • The applicant must be a full-time student in a Ph.D. program at a Canadian school and must be a Canadian citizen or international student studying in Canada.
  • The university receiving the Vainer CGS universities quota must nominate the candidate.
  • The candidate must be enrolled in the initial Ph.D. program.
  • The candidate cannot currently be enrolled in any other Ph.D. program funded by a grant or scholarship from one of the three Canadian funding organizations, CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.
  • The applicant must have earned a first-class average during the previous two academic years.
  • Students undertaking combined professional degree programs are eligible, but only Ph.D. tenure will be funded (MD/Ph.D., JD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D).
  • The candidates’ research proposals must contain a sizable amount of original research.
  • The applicant cannot currently have a faculty position at either the institution with the Vanier quota or any other institution. The applicant must have permission from the university to take time off for the Ph.D. program to be eligible.
  • The candidate must be enrolled full-time in school. The student may enroll as a part-time student if they must support their family or have a condition.
  • Compared to a full-time student, the two-month study will be regarded as a one-month study for part-time students. Employees of the Canadian
  • The federal government is only qualified if they will be taking a leave of absence without pay.
  • Candidates who meet the requirements may apply for agency-specific and Vanier Ph.D. grants. However, if they are chosen for more than one scholarship, they must select only one grant.

Deadlines:

The scholarship for the years 2022–2023 has two deadlines:

  1. Each institution determines and controls this deadline. Institutional deadline: A second due date and time will display at the top of each page after the student has identified the institution suggested for Ph.D. studies in ResearchNet. Your application must be submitted to the institution through ResearchNet by this date. After this particular day and time, your application cannot be submitted.
  2. Program Deadline: November 1, 2022, institutions must submit their finalized nominations to the Vanier CGS program (20:00 Eastern Time).
