Opportunity Description

Scholars who have achieved their Ph.D. since 2021 are encouraged to apply for a WCED Postdoctoral Fellowship through the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies (WCED) at the University of Michigan. This two-year fellowship encourages multidisciplinary study of the general historical, political, economic, and social circumstances that either enable democracy and autocracy to flourish or to falter and collapse.

A fellowship for the years 2023–25 has three openings. WCED Postdoctoral Fellows are expected to concentrate on their own research throughout their two-year fellowship while living on-campus full-time at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. They are also required to occasionally attend WCED workshops and activities and give at least one public talk. If desired, a teaching opportunity can be available during the second year of the fellowship.

Eligibilities:

  • All disciplines are welcome to apply, however most recent candidates and Fellows have been from political science, sociology, history, and anthropology.
  • Before starting the fellowship, fellows must have successfully defended and submitted their dissertation.
  • Only individuals who got their Ph.D. after January 1, 2021, are eligible.
