Opportunity Description

Urban Studies Foundation (USF) invites applications to its International Fellowship scheme for urban scientists from the Global South. The fellowship awards fund to support a scholar’s sabbatical period at a university of his/her choice in the Global South of North with the aim of writing-up the candidate’s current research findings in the format of a scientific article or/and book to be published under the direction of a selected mentor in the field of study. The funding is granted for a 3-9 month period and the proposed research may be on any theme relating to today’s urban realities in the GS.

Eligibility criteria

Candidates possessing the following criteria are eligible:

  • Must be early-to-mid career urban scholars;
  • Must have attained a PhD within the 10 preceding years (by the submission deadline);
  • Be currently working in a university or research institution in the Global South;
  • Must be nationals of a country in the GS; and
  • Must make appropriate arrangements to be guided by a suitably experienced senior urban scholar during the program;

Benefits

The fellowship funding covers:

  • Fellows’ accommodation and subsistence expenses during their stay at the host institution
  • Return air travel fare (economy class)
  • Costs related to researches, enrollment fees, and other resources
  • A budget will also be available for the mentor to help the Fellow meet their set research aims

Further conditions

  • Applicants for this fellowship may also apply for a small number of extraordinary care costs to support a dependent fellow(s) during the program;
  • Fellowships should commence no later than one year after the deadline closure (April 30, 2021);

Notification of result

Notification of outcome for those who have applied is expected to be sent within 4 weeks after the application submission. USF cannot provide any feedback on applications and therefore its decisions are final.

Applicants must apply by completing the online application form no later than the mentioned deadline.

What to include in the application?

  • Applicants’ information including contact info, latest education, recent academic role(s), and full contact information of two academic referees. Both references need to be submitted to the USF upon demand.
  • A proposal for the fellowship containing information like dates, mentorship, and host organization arrangements.
  • A draft budget having main expense items.
  • Another research proposal containing a synopsis of outlined study (1200 words max), intended finding (300 words maximum), selection of the host institution (300 words maximum), and a statement saying how the candidate’s selected mentor will support and facilitate the proposed research (300 words maximum.
  • Evidence of the applicants’ nationality.
  • Applicants CV showing academic achievements and publications (3 pages max).
  • A brief CV from the mentor which contains any previous mentoring experience (3 pages max).
  • A supporting letter from the potential mentor indicating their willingness to be a mentor to the fellow and indicating fitness of the host institution (2 pages max).
