Opportunity Description

Applications are now open for the Asian Development Bank and Japan Scholarship Program- ADB-JSP  for the academic year 2026- 2027 . Applicants from an ADB borrowing member country and Japanese ODA scholarship-eligible countries who wish to pursue their graduate programs can apply for this program.

One hundred thirty-five (135) scholarships are available for qualified applicants to benefit from the ADB-JSP allowances, such as tuition fees, housing, book allowances, medical insurance, and travel expenses. ADB-JSP also provides expenditure for students who need additional training under particular circumstances. Furthermore, this program includes improving language proficiency and computer literacy.

In April 1988, the Japanese government started funding the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Japan Scholarship Program (JSP) to provide an opportunity for well-qualified citizens of ADB’s developing member countries. The program helped applicants to pursue postgraduate studies in science and technology, economics, management, and more development-related fields at universities in Asia and the Pacific.

Benefits of the ADB-JSP

The ADB-JSP is a fully-funded program that provides the following allowances:

  • Monthly subsistence allowance, including housing
  • Full tuition fees
  • Medical insurance
  • Travel expenses
  • Books and instructional materials
  • Students who are involved in research may receive a special grant to prepare their thesis.
  • The ADB-JSP may also cover computer literacy, primary language, and other similar courses in particular circumstances.

Note: The ADB-JSP does not provide the applicant’s family, extra-curricular courses, or training costs. Also, students are responsible for additional travel costs during the study program, field trips, participation in workshops, seminars, internships, supplementary educational materials, or purchase of educational equipment such as computers.

Requirements for the ADB-JSP

Below is the set of eligibility criteria and requirements that all applicants should meet to apply for the ADB-JSP:

  • Applicants must hold the nationality of an ADB borrowing member country and a Japanese ODA scholarship-eligible country;
  • Dual citizenship of any developed country is not eligible.
  • Have received admission to an approved master’s degree program at a Designated University.
  • Prove a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent with an outstanding academic record;
  • Have at least two (2) years of full-time professional working experience after a university degree by the time of application.
  • Prove communication skills in oral and written English;
  • Not be older than 35 years at the time of application, unless exempted in exceptional cases with the expressed endorsement of the Government of Japan;
  • Be in a suitable health manner;
  • Commit to return and work in their home country for at least two years after graduation;
  • Executive Directors, Alternate Directors, management, staff, and consultants of ADB and their close relatives, including spouse, mother, father, stepmother, stepfather, sister, stepsister, brother, stepbrother, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, niece, or nephew are not eligible;
  • The staff of ADB–JSP Designated Institutions are not eligible;
  • Applicant should reside and work in their home country;
  • Must not have already enrolled in graduate degree programs.

ADB-JSP Required Documents

Applicants who wish to apply for the Asian Development Bank and Japan Scholarship Program should submit the following documents:

  • Update income tax return or certification of their annual or monthly salary;
  • Certificate of family income (parents’ income);
  • Filled out application forms;
  • Copies of academic records;
  • Admission and endorsed letter of the academic institutions;
  • ADB-JSP information sheet;
  • Additional supporting documents, if needed

Application Procedure

The ADB-JSP application procedure details are as follows:

  1. Request information and application forms from the chosen partner university;
  2. Complete the required documents for the application package, including the ADB-JSP information sheet
  3. Send documents to the university.
  4. The university assesses and decides on admission and applicants;
  5. The institution/university sends a shortlist of candidates to ADB;
  6. ADB reviews submissions from institutions.
  7. ADB recommends successful applicants as per the selection criteria to the Japanese executive director for approval;
  8. ADB selects the awardees and informs the institution;
  9. The institution informs all awardees.
