Introduction to the scholarship

Berlin Graduate School for Global and Transregional Studies (BGTS) is calling for applications for its Ph.D. program for the academic year of 2021. BGTS offers a three-year full-time structured Ph.D. program for applicants from all over the world. Therefore, applicants with relevant backgrounds can apply to study at one of German’s most recognized social science schools. Similarly, by undertaking a doctoral program at the BGTS, scholars will enjoy up-to-the-minute theory classes, profound training in research methods and research design, soft skills courses, and individual guidance.

Benefits/funding

Two scholarships for international candidates are available which are funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). DAAD scholarship applicants must not have lived in Germany for over 15 months prior to the nomination.

Further conditions

  • The DAAD scholarship applicants’ final exam (Master Degree or equivalent) must have been conducted no longer than six years ago.
  • Since there are only a few Ph.D. scholarships available, candidates who do not receive scholarships can be admitted to the program providing that they ensure their own external funding.
  • Therefore, the host institution strongly encourages you to apply to other sponsors/foundations simultaneously with your BGTS application.

Eligibilities

  • Excellent candidates with a master’s degree in social sciences (usually consisting of a total of 300 European Credit Transfer System [ECTS] credits including the bachelor’s degree) is eligible to apply.
  • Applicants’ master’s degree qualifying for Ph.D. studies can be in the social sciences, history, economics, law, or area studies;
  • The scholarship is open to applicants of all nationalities.
  • Your final grade point average should be at least 2.4 (German grade system). You can compare your earned GPA with that of ECTS or German GPA.
  • In case you haven’t completed your master’s degree while applying, you may still apply, but you must provide official documents of graduation upon your successful completion of a master’s degree before getting enrolled in the Ph.D. program.
  • Should your official diploma not be ready at the time of your application, you should send some evidence of your academic performance (e.g. a current transcript) instead.

English language requirements

The Ph.D. applicants must provide a certificate of English proficiency_ C1 (or better) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, equivalent to the followings (scores are minimums):  IELTS: 8.0

  • TOEFL PBT: 603/677
  • 263/300 in the TOEFL CBT
  • TOEFL IBT: 110/120
  • TOEIC: 785
