Opportunity Description

Biodiversity faces unprecedented global threats, with habitat loss, land use change, and over-exploitation driving rapid biodiversity loss. Earth Journalism Network (EJN) recognizes the critical role of media in highlighting biodiversity issues, promoting solutions, and holding policymakers accountable. As part of EJN’s Biodiversity Media Initiative, grants are available to organizations that enhance media reporting on biodiversity and conservation.

The Biodiversity Media Grants Support projects that:

  • Produce in-depth stories to enhance biodiversity and conservation coverage.
  • Conduct biodiversity and conservation training for journalists and media organizations.
  • Create or strengthen journalist networks to address biodiversity issues.

  • The grant should cover project expenses and may include funding for equipment. Additionally, co-financing is encouraged but not required.

Eligibility Criteria

The following are the requirements:

  • Projects must be implemented in low- or middle-income countries, focusing on biodiversity-rich regions.
  • Priority goes to biodiversity-rich regions like the Amazon, Central Africa, and Southeast Asia.
  • EJN encourages applications from previously ungranted countries, especially West Africa, Central America, and Eastern Europe.
  • Open to journalist networks, media, civil society, or academic institutions.
  • Preference for applications from professional journalists, media organizations, or journalism schools.
  • Affiliation with existing media or detailed plans for new networks are
  • Advocacy or political campaigning-based applications are not accepted.
  • Former EJN grantees are eligible, with a preference for new applicants.
  • Applications should be only in English, but you can produce materials in any language.
  • Transparency is mandatory regarding generative AI tools; unethical conduct may lead to disqualification.

Required Documents

Applicants must submit a detailed budget justification, project proposal, and supporting documents per the application guidelines. All materials should be in English.

Selection Process

A panel of international judges, including Internews staff and environmental journalism experts, review applications. Evaluation based on:

  • The overall quality of the

  • Financial viability and cost-effectiveness.
