The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning invites countries from across the world to apply for membership in the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC).

The UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) is an international policy-oriented network that provides inspiration, expertise, and best practice. UNESCO GNLC members at all stages of development enjoy the benefits of sharing lifelong learning policies and practices, production and exchange of know-how on key global challenges and solutions, capacity building and training initiatives among member countries, and presence in global events such as the International Conference on Learning Cities.

The focus areas of GNLC activities

According to the UNESCO GNLC strategy for 2019–2021, the 170+ members of the network stress their joint activities on seven key areas as:

  • Education for sustainable development
  • Equity and inclusion
  • Educational planning
  • Monitoring and evaluation
  • Education for global citizenship
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Health and well-being, and

The Network upholds the achievement of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (‘Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all’) and also SDG 11 (‘Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’).

What is a learning city?

A learning city:

  • effectively organizes resources in every sector to support inclusive learning,
    from basic to higher education,
  • reinvigorates learning in families and communities,
  • provides learning facilities for and in the workplace,
  • extends the application of modern learning technologies,
  • improves quality and excellence in learning,
  • enhances a culture of learning throughout life.

Furthermore, the city heightens individual empowerment and social inclusion, economic and cultural progress, as well as sustainable development.

How to apply for this membership?

To apply for GNLC’s membership, you “cities” are required to submit your applications to the UNESCO National Commission in your respective country in order to be endorsed and submitted to the UNESCO Institute of Lifeline Learning.
