Overview of the fellowship
Applications are now open for APAICS 2020 fellowship in the U.S. The Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) Congressional Fellowship is intended for young AAPI experts looking to expand their experience in public policy and service. Therefore, this full-time, paid program, employs fellows in congressional offices to obtain policy experience serving as part of the legislative team. In addition, the program helps fellows develop their leadership skills, stimulates political engagement, and nurtures interest in a public service career. Benefits and privileges
Congressional fellows will receive:

Program requirements and fellows’ responsibilities
Fellows will be required to:
- Work 40 hours per week at the placement site
- Attend a one-day orientation
- Attend all APAICS-sponsored activities
- Develop and implement a policy briefing to enhance public policy matters important to AAPIs
- Complete quarterly reports
- Submit a mid-program and final program evaluation report
- Comply with APAICS policies with regard to work performance and personal conduct
Eligibility requirements
Candidates meeting the below criteria are eligible:
- Have completed their undergraduate or graduate degree and/or hold at least five years of public service experience prior to the program starting date.
- Be U.S. nationals, legal permanent residents, or people who possess legal permission to work full-time without restriction for any U.S. employer and who possess lawful proof of employment authorization.
- Note: Individuals who are seeking consideration under the “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival” (DACA) policy must have an Employment Authorization Document at the time of application having validity throughout the program.
- Remember that family members of the APAICS Board of Directors or National Advisory Council cannot apply for any APAICS programs.
Selection process
The APAICS Congressional Fellowship Program is a highly competitive program. Hence, a Selection Committee including program alumni, staff, and board members review them in a multi-step process.
In general, the selection includes three rounds:
1: Application Review: Applications are reviewed separately and scored by the Selection Committee. Scoring criteria:
Evidence of leadership and leadership potential, including community involvement, commitment to public service, clearness of writing, and ability to challenge self.
2: Interview: Top-scoring candidates receive an invitation to interview with members of the Selection Committee.
Scoring criteria:
- Leadership qualities and experience,
- Professionalism,
- Commitment to public service, and
- Future plans and goals.
3: Finalist Interviews: Top candidates will advance to the final stage as finalists. Finalist application packages are shred with congressional office partners for interviews and placement.
